1. WHAT IS THE EMOTION WHEEL
The legendary emotion wheel we’re discussing was proposed by Professor Robert Plutchik in 1980. It’s a classification system of emotions through which we can see that different emotions can combine and create another emotion. much like mixing colors. Each type of emotion carries a different color.
According to him, there are 8 primary emotions, arranged and illustrated according to pairs of opposites as follows:
>>> Joy opposes sadness (joy – sadness)
>>> Anger opposes fear (anger – fear)
>>> Trust opposes disgust (trust – disgust)
>>> Surprise opposes anticipation (surprise – anticipation)
2. THREE ELEMENTS OF THE EMOTION WHEEL
- Color
As mentioned, the eight primary emotions include: joy, sadness, anger, fear, trust, disgust, surprise, and anticipation. These are the fundamental emotions of humans.
Plutchik arranges them into a second circle within the emotion wheel, with each having its own color. For example, anger is represented by red while joy is represented by yellow.
- Shades
There are many different types of emotions developed based on the 8 basic emotions. You will find that the intensity of the emotion is expressed by the depth of the corresponding color. And as you move towards the center of the wheel, the intensity of the emotion becomes stronger.
For example, moving from the center of the circle, the intensity of the emotion gradually decreases from rage to annoyance, or from astonishment to surprise. Similarly, as you move outward from the circle, you can see emotions with lighter nuances and paler colors.
- Relationships between emotions
We can easily find pairs of opposite emotions located in positions opposite to each other. An interesting point is that two adjacent emotions can combine and create a new emotion. For example, trust and joy combine to create love (joy + trust = love). Similarly, trust and fear combine to create submission (trust + fear = submission).
This formula creates a variety of emotions that you may have experienced before but couldn’t identify.
3. THE EFFECTS OF THE EMOTION WHEEL
>>> The emotion wheel helps you understand your own emotions.
>>> Detect and control negative emotions through the emotion wheel.
4. HOW TO APPLY THE EMOTION WHEEL IN SELF-DEVELOPMENT?
More and more people are talking about “self-understanding” nowadays. And understanding emotions is an important part of that “self-understanding” journey.
We have discussed what the emotion wheel is, its benefits, so how do you use the emotion wheel to truly understand and develop yourself?
A simple way you can apply it is:
- Step 0: Understand what the emotion wheel is. If it’s still unclear, don’t hesitate to go back to the content above to review.
- Step 1: Identify the 8 basic emotions in the second circle and determine which emotion your current feelings are most similar to.
- Step 2: Take one primary emotion as the center, identify specific related emotions (which may have varying degrees of intensity) on the outer and inner edges of the circle.
- Step 3: Connect with your current perceptions and locate your emotions among the ones you just identified.
- Step 4: Record the emotions you’ve discovered. Share it with anyone if you feel necessary and comfortable.
- Step 5: Identify the cause of that emotion (especially for negative emotions). Learn to appreciate if something makes you happy and not let negative emotions control you.
By effectively using the emotion wheel, you can easily predict how you will feel in a certain situation. From there, it’s easier to control your emotions, regain your spirits after negative thoughts, avoid negative behaviors, and solve problems in a positive direction.
Wishing you always joy.
